At NAPA Centre, we pride ourselves on using a multidisciplinary, individualized approach to therapy. This unique method brings together the expertise of occupational therapists (OTs), physiotherapists (PTs), and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to address the diverse needs of each child we serve. By collaborating, our team ensures that therapy sessions are cohesive and that each child benefits from a treatment plan tailored to their unique challenges and strengths. Here’s an in-depth look at how we implement sensory strategies, speech strategies, and physical and positioning strategies.
Our team-based approach creates an environment where every child can thrive at NAPA!
Many children have sensory processing needs that can impact their ability to organize their movement, focus, transition between tasks, or regulate their emotions. Our occupational therapists are trained to understand and address these sensory processing challenges, helping children feel more calm, comfortable and engaged in their environment. Sensory integration is the process by which the brain organizes sensory information from the body and environment. When sensory input is overwhelming or difficult for a child to process, they may react with behaviors. This is where sensory strategies become crucial!
Our OTs work closely with PTs and SLPs to incorporate sensory-based activities that regulate and prepare children for their therapy sessions. For instance, a child who is sensitive to sound or touch may need calming, grounding activities to help them feel safe and focused. Deep pressure or “heavy work” activities—such as pushing or pulling, squeezing a stress ball, or wearing weighted vests—can provide calming input that grounds the nervous system.
For other children who seek movement or have high energy levels, swinging, jumping, or spinning may be integrated to help them focus. These strategies, as well as modalities such a Whole Body Vibration and Horse Riding Simulator can be incorporated in speech sessions to improve engagement. If a child is working with a PT on strength-building exercises but struggles to stay focused, the OT might introduce sensory breaks or sensory-based activities to maintain engagement and regulation.
Communication is a fundamental part of every child’s experience, and at NAPA, our speech-language pathologists are committed to helping children find their voice, whether through verbal speech or alternative communication systems. Communication development goes beyond just verbal speech; it includes receptive language (understanding language), expressive language (using words), and social communication (interacting with others).
By collaborating with OTs and PTs, our SLPs create an integrated approach that addresses the whole child, making it easier for them to use their communication skills in everyday life. Many children at NAPA use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. When children use these systems to communicate, SLPs work closely with OTs and PTs to incorporate these tools into sessions. For example, during physical activities, the PT might reinforce the child’s use of their AAC device by prompting them to request breaks or comment on activities, giving them practice in a functional setting.
Physical therapists are key to helping children develop the strength, balance, and coordination needed for everyday activities. Our PTs at NAPA are experts in helping children build a strong physical foundation that supports other areas of development, including fine motor skills, sensory processing, and communication. Physical therapy goals vary widely, from building head and trunk strength or sitting balance, to developing coordination and strength for running and jumping.
Positioning plays a crucial role in helping children engage in all types of activities. Proper positioning ensures that children have the stability and alignment they need to participate in tasks comfortably and effectively. Our PTs work closely with OTs and SLPs to determine the best positions for each child during specific activities. For instance, a child who struggles with head and trunk control may be positioned in a supportive chair during SLP activities, allowing them to focus on speech tasks. Alternatively, if an OT is working on fine motor tasks, they will ensure that the child’s posture allows for better postural and hand control.
Every child has unique strengths, needs, and goals, and at NAPA Centre, we’re dedicated to developing treatment plans that reflect the whole child. Each therapist contributes their specialized knowledge, but it’s the collaborative process that makes our approach so impactful.
The success of our multidisciplinary approach relies on constant communication among therapists and flexibility in adapting strategies as a child grows and changes. Regular team meetings, daily check in’s, progress updates, and a commitment to each child’s evolving needs keep our approach responsive and individualized.
Our approach is not just about improving therapy outcomes but also about empowering families. By teaching families how to use sensory, speech, and positioning strategies at home, we help them support their child’s development in everyday activities. NAPA families become active participants in the therapeutic process, reinforcing what their children learn and experiencing the joy of each milestone along the way.
NAPA Centre’s commitment to individualized, multidisciplinary care helps children grow and reach their fullest potential. Through a holistic approach, our team of OTs, PTs, and SLPs empowers each child to overcome challenges, develop new skills, and build a foundation for lifelong growth. We love being a part of each child’s journey and celebrating their progress every step of the way!
