Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a modality aimed at improving strength, coordination, endurance, sensory feedback and timing in muscles used to promote improved motor control and strength in patients.
Using a device and small adhesive electrodes, electrical stimulation involves applying low level electrical impulses to targeted muscles causing them to contract. It is implemented during therapeutic activities to assist with promoting or restoring function in muscles that may be weak and/or uncoordinated, and to assist with decreasing spasticity.
Electrical stimulation can be used on all parts of the body including the back, legs, feet, arms and hands and is integrated into occupational, physical and speech therapy sessions at NAPA Centre.
You can now purchase the FES units that we utilise in our clinics for use in your home program. These particular units are not available for retail sale in Australia and can only be purchased directly though NAPA. Your child must have had FES utilised in clinic in a recent intensive or appointment and this must be supported by your therapist. The cost of the unit is $1000 + GST which includes the Chatttanooga Continuum Device, 3 sets of electode pads and a written document prepared by your therapist with instructions and settings for the device that have been calibrated specifically for your child. We recommend you also receive thorough face to face instructions from your therapist when in clinic and that you follow these instructions when utilising the device at home.
Additional electrode packs are available from NAPA reception for $25/set. You can grab when in clinic or call to order and we can send out in the mail at no additional cost.
