As a paediatric physiotherapist, one of my core goals is to help children with physical disabilities gain the strength, independence and mobility they need to lead active and fulfilling lives. The journey can be challenging, both for the children and their families, as they navigate different therapy methods, assistive devices and strategies.
Among the many tools available, the Firefly Upsee stands out as a particularly effective and impactful innovation for children with limited mobility.
The Firefly Upsee is another type of mobility aid that empowers children to experience the sensation of standing and walking, often for the first time. It’s designed for children with conditions like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or muscular dystrophy, offering both physical and emotional benefits to the child as well as offering unique advantages for parents and caregivers.
The Firefly Upsee is a harness-based system that allows a caregiver to support the child’s weight while they remain upright and engage in controlled walking motions. The child wears a harness around their chest and hips, while the caregiver wears a harness around their waist. The two harnesses are connected with adjustable straps, enabling the caregiver to guide the child’s movements and providing a safe, stable environment for them to experience walking.
From a physical therapy standpoint, this device is more than just a tool to help a child stand – it’s a means of engaging them in dynamic, weight-bearing activities that can stimulate muscle development, improve posture, and promote neural connections. This is crucial in a population where standing and walking may not otherwise be possible.

Weight-bearing activity is essential for developing bone density, strengthening muscles, and improving joint stability. Many children with mobility impairments miss out on this vital component of physical development. By allowing the child to engage in standing and walking, the Upsee facilitates the natural process of weight shifting, which helps stimulate bone growth and strengthens the muscles needed for functional mobility.
Children with physical disabilities often adopt compensatory postures due to muscle weakness or spasticity. The Firefly Upsee encourages proper alignment by supporting the child in an upright position. As the child stands, the body is naturally prompted to work on posture, engaging core muscles and improving spinal alignment. This can have long term benefits in preventing postural deformities and improving overall functional mobility.
Although the child is not walking independently, they are still working to maintain balance and engage muscles in the process. The Firefly Upsee provides a controlled way for children to work on strengthening key muscle groups, including the hips, glutes and core. Overtime, this can lead to increased muscle tone, which is especially important for children with conditions like cerebal palsy, where muscle weakness and spasticity can hinder functional movement.
Even when children are not independently mobile, they can benefit from experiencing the mechanics of walking. The Upsee allows them to engage in the motor planning required for walking without the full weight of their body being a barrier. This helps activate neural pathways that are critical for walking and other gross motor skills. The child can experience weight shifting, foot placement and balance which supports overall motor learning.
From a neurological perspective, providing children with mobility experiences can encourage the brain to form new neural connections, especially when paired with appropriate stimulation and sensory input. The movement involved in using the Upsee provides the brain with important proprioceptive feedback, which helps improve sensory motor integration. This type of engagement can support neuroplasticity, particularly in children with conditions that affect motor function.
In therapy, we often talk about the importance of play and social interaction for children’s development. For children with mobility impairments, participating in social activities can be difficult. The Upsee provides a way for children to experience peer interactions on an equal footing by allowing them to stand and walk alongside other children. This can help children feel more included and engaged in group activities, whether it’s at school, in therapy, or in social settings
Incorporating the Firefly Upsee into physical therapy sessions can offer a wealth of therapeutic benefits. It can serve as a dynamic way to challenge the child’s physical abilities while also promoting engagement in functional movements. While the Upsee may not replace the need for independent walking, it is an essential part of the journey toward improved mobility.
